The Ups and Downs of Moss as Material
Last week when I was sewing into a piece of moss and a worm crawled out of it. I sat there stunned for a moment and watched as it poked its head out of the hole. I observed it for a bit then it jumped out of the hole and wriggled around on my desk like a Mexican jumping bean! I became panicked and swept the little wriggler back onto the moss and quickly headed out the door and set it free outside....

I’ve been wondering about how many plants it takes to make enough oxygen for a human to breathe. Thanks to the OSU Ask an Expert I now have an answer!

Thoughts on the body framing a plant
When I think about the body framing a plant, I think about the way that symbiotic systems can become mutually interdependent on one another.  This happens with the oxygen that we breathe being produced plants, the vegetables and food that we eat as well as the way the plants are used to decorate ourselves in our own rituals like the case of a corsage at Prom or a wedding…. In your...

On Collecting- notes from our crit seminar...
Arcy (our instructor) thinks that every artist is also a collector of objects and our class certainly proved his hypothesis: Billy collects paper clips, Amber-fabric, Heather-plaster teeth, Amanda-fabric, Jacob-dead things, Amber-coffee mugs & fabric etc. • Massing things makes objects interesting because you are able to notice similarities and differences among the objects ...

How does using the body as a framing device for a...
I’ve been considering the idea of framing this week. Art uses the technique of framing as a means to challenge the viewer to think about things that might otherwise go unnoticed or to see things in a different way. Think of Mark Dion’s Vivarium in which a nurse log from the coastal rainforest is transplanted to a specially designed greenhouse in downtown Seattle so that visitors can...

reflection on my habit of collecting things
On Friday Marci and I talked about making work personal in a way that might be idiosyncratic…how can I connect these big issues I’m passionate about with something that is uniquely Jody? This thought has been swirling around and then it dawned on me. Throughout my life I’ve had a proclivity to collect pods, rocks, flowers, sticks, sand, water etc because they are from...

I didn’t plant any seeds yesterday, I forgot the necklace at the studio. I am hoping to go there today and get it then plant 2 today. I think the idea of planting one seed a day is a good starting point but maybe too rigid to keep up with - which I suspected. This isn’t going to make me abandon the whole thing though… I found a fitting passage in the Stella Natura calendar that...

More thoughts on "Counting On"
I forgot to mention in my previous post…perhaps when I leave a seed in a place I could collect something from the place where I plant the seed and store it in the empty bead.

Counting On...
I realized that I needed to activate “Counting On” and release the seeds to see what will happen. How many of the seeds would grow? What would the process/ritual of planting a seed a day be like? Where would I want to plant one? Would I wear the necklace the whole day or just while I was walking? Would I take a seed out every day and put it in my pocket, then plant it? Would it be...
